“I did everything in the previous election campaigns to bring about a change of government. I did not agree to join a narrow right-wing government despite the great personal political changes I could have made. “Significance, and a date for the end of Benjamin Netanyahu’s term, I decided to support this move. We chose a compromise out of a sober view of the state of the state, the state of Israeli society and the political reality,” Peretz wrote.

“I knew I would pay a heavy political price but I did so because I wanted to prevent a fourth election campaign that would heat up the spirits, increase incitement and internal agitation among the people and by all predictions (if elections were held in July-August 2020), Netanyahu would have formed a narrow and radical right-wing government. “Unfortunately, the partnership within the government has failed. Netanyahu has created a crisis of confidence that has only grown to a point where the government can no longer be held, so the State of Israel is embarking on a difficult election campaign today that no one knows how it will end,” he added.

“I recently rejected the possibility of being armored in a safe place at the top of blue and white, on the grounds that I represent not only myself but an entire movement that contains excellent people and leaders all over the country and leads a value worldview. The Labor Party is a 100-year-old movement. “The Labor Party has the human resources, values, a glorious youth movement, a labor movement and a settlement movement that is a healthy political infrastructure for anyone who will lead the Labor Party in the future,” Peretz continued.

Peretz announced earlier this month in an interview with the GLC that he intends to run for president. In an interview with Gali Tzahal, Peretz said: “I am running for president. “Leftists – everyone knows how to appreciate my positions, even those who oppose them.”

A battle will now be waged over the leadership of the Labor Party. Among the names now mentioned are Ron Huldai, Avi Nissenkorn, Itzik Shmuli, Merav Michaeli and also Ofer Shelach who is examining various options. At the same time, last week, Labor activists appealed to former Prime Minister Ehud Barak to lead the Labor Party under the “New Array” brand.
