The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro that has just launched have great specs and features, but the real breakthrough is OnePlus ’popular partnership with the renowned camera company Hasselblad to improve the photo capabilities of the new phones . So how advanced are these photos compared to those taken with OnePlus phones last year?
Since we’re a year or two away from OnePlus phones packing Hasselblad lenses, we’re just comparing software here: the OnePlus 9 benefits from Hasselblad color correction. Ideally, this leads to more real colors in pictures, and our original experience confirmed these claims.
But we wanted to see just how the new phone’s cameras compared to their predecessors. Read on for side-by-side comparisons between photos taken with the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 8T (released in October 2020), and OnePlus 8 (released in April 2020).
We particularly compare the main cameras: the OnePlus 9 packs a 48MP f / 1.8, 1 / 1.43 ”1.12µm lens, while the OnePlus has the same 48MP f / 1.8 1/80” 0.8µm 8T and OnePlus 8 with OIS.
But since the software is related to the front camera, too, let’s compare the selfie lenses as well: all three phones use the same 16 MP, f / 2.4, 1 / 3.06 ”, 1.0 I’m a shooter.
If you needed TL; DR, here it is: across the board, the OnePlus 9 captured the most balanced and detailed images of the original, with the OnePlus 8T retaining some of that but with a smoother palate. The OnePlus 8 basically emits far more vibrant colors, but these feel too absorbent in comparison, and as a result many dark sections lose detail in deep shades. .
And as a final note, the OnePlus 8’s camera mode goes down to a 4: 3 resolution that needs to be turned on in situations, which we didn’t like for this comparison and to be sure that it completely pollutes us – just the color of the picture and so sharp. comparisons are still valid. Thanks for joining us.

Comparison of park landscape
Starting with a basic park landscape showing a mix of green grass / sky blue / warm pink scenes, the OnePlus 9 shows the sharpest picture: look at the grass in the foreground and leaves in the background , which retains a more contrasting color than the 8T. The landscape of the 8 is vibrant, but the trees take on a more orange-ish color than in the other pictures. All the clouds are very detailed for how big the sky was in the sky.

Park afternoon
The same view at dusk reveals a bit more suction in the pictures of the 8T (and much more in the 8): the green grass is much brighter – which certainly makes it easier to see , but less true.
Notice the sun passing through the tree line on the left, which is moderately yellow in the 9th and so bright it illuminates the branches. To be clear, none of these are brilliant pictures, but at least the 9 captures a palette of more balanced colors, we personally prefer.

The fountain of the well
Another series shows how the preview in the 8T and 8 makes pop colors, but cartoonishly so compared to the 9. Take a look at the loss in gear in climbing an orange moss on a corner edge the concrete fountain as well as the foliage in the backwoods.

Macro flour
Okay, in a very big way, the 9 wins in a landslide because we got it to focus on what we were shooting. But keep in mind that the other two phones and the 9 have a special macro camera still shoot an advanced image with its 50MP ultra-wide lens (just tap on the floral image in the camera app for ‘macro mode’).
But even beyond the focus case, the 9 has the best color balance, showing pale white stamen filaments and light yellow anther compared to the light pink petals, all of which look more vibrant than in the case. the 8T and less too warm than the 8. Great brightness on the foliage next to it, too.

Effect of depth
The 9 has a slightly better color (less vibrant green) and a shade as well as a better depth stratification – check out the flower in the front vs the fuzzy one on the back against the completely dull pine branches on the back .

Selfie
As mentioned in our review, the 9 takes very narrow selfies, as does the 8T, but the big difference is the down-reflective glow from a clear surface (like, ahem, my forehead).
The 9 also has a slightly richer color in the picture than that, which makes the image of the 8T look a bit washed out, and the 8 has a lot of detail in the same stones when they are overshadowed. This is the least we’ve seen Hasselblad color correction come into play.

Selfie photo
The 9 was the clear winner, although the 8T seemed to dive in without focusing for depth effects at all – but it shows how the front cameras of OnePlus phones can be blown out if they focus on an overly white subject unknowingly. (the clouds, not me, I swear).
However, the 9 has a good color balance and less swelling (look around the eyes, where color is still in the lit cheek against the completely white cheek in photo 8).

Sunset beach
We thought we would end up at sunset on a beach. Again, the 8T has a more uniform palate (and too much on the 8), but the 9 feels lit with the sun but no too yellow with – note the difference in front grass, pole fencing, and palm trees, all of which are much warmer. The 9 has a more balanced color circulation, incorporating a more nuanced shade.
