There are two new dangers in the Age of the Supreme Republic, the Nihil and the Drengir – but Star Wars has revealed which is the worst!
Warning! Destroyers ahead Star Wars: Doctor Aphra # 8
Star Wars just proved to be the biggest threat from the Age of the High Republic the monstrous species is called the Drengir. The future of Star Wars lies in the past – in particular, in the Age of the Supreme Republic. With the Skywalker saga now at an end, Lucasfilm is extending the Star Wars franchise to new media, the Unknown Regions, and the past. The mainstream stories set in the Age of the Upper Republic take place 200 years earlier Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, at a time when the star was in a peaceful state.
That peace was destroyed by a band of criminals the Nihil, which Lucasfilm has compared to space Vikings. But as interesting as the Nihil may be, they are not the only frightening new threat revealed in this period. The Jedi have unwittingly awakened a race of dark side plant creatures that even the Sith could not defeat – and the monstrous Drengir seems to have been unleashed all over the galaxy.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra # 8, starring Alyssa Wong and Minkyu Jung, proves that the Drengir is the real threat from the Age of the Upper Republic. This story is set in between The Empire strikes back and The Jedi return, and is the star of the rogue adventurer / archaeologist Doctor Aphra who is hired to study Nihil technology for sale on the black market. Aphra’s quest takes her to the remote world of Dol’har Hyde on the Outer Rim. Although Aphra does not understand it, it is clear that this world is the site of a battle between the Nihil and the Drengir; the Nihil set up a fight, but it is clear that a large number of their ships sank with the forest, which the Drengir controls using their Force secret powers. Apparently, when the Nihil and the Drengir finally went face-to-face, it didn’t go well for the Nihil.
This is Lucasfilm’s standard transmedia approach, which spans multiple times at once. Doctor Aphra # 8 essentially caters to readers ’tastes, to give them a sense of battle we haven’t seen yet. The threat of the Drengir seems to have spread throughout the entire constellation in the Age of the High Republic, and will eventually end in war with the Nihil; that makes sense, since the Drengir considers all mammals directly “meat“to be spoiled, and they would not agree to rest. But the interesting question is whether Dol’har Hyde is just one world visited by the Drengir, or is it their home, on the for a single Jedi visit in Claudia Gray ‘s novel. In the dark.
The interesting question, however, is why Dr. Aphra knows nothing about the Drengir. It is possible that, after the Drengir’s chased during the Age of the High Republic, the Jedi deliberately wipe out all records of the creatures; they may represent mysteries of the dark side that the Jedi would rather forget. There is probably a lot more twist coming into this grand Star Wars transmedia adventure.
