Chinese electric car maker Nio, known as the “Chinese Tesla”, announced today (Friday) that it has decided to close its plant for five days – due to the global shortage of chips.

According to the company, stopping production starting March 29 will reduce Nio’s vehicle shipments in the first quarter by at least 500 vehicles. According to the company’s estimates, it is expected to deliver 19,500 vehicles in the first three months of the year, compared to the previously announced forecast of 20,000-20,500 vehicles.

Even with the reduction, Nio is on track to hand over a greater number of cars compared to its rivals China Xpeng and Li Auto.

Other automakers have announced a halt to production due to a shortage of chips. The automotive industry is also suffering from the effects of the corona plague and trade tensions between China and the US, which erupted under the Trump administration.
