The UK and the EU have said they are working together to create a “win-win” situation and give vaccines to all citizens, including the series over the Oxford / AstraZeneca injection. The European Commission has proposed stricter controls on Covid vaccine exports after it accused AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish company, of not honoring its contract to hand over EU countries. The plans are not restrictive – but could lead to tensions by the UK. But late in the day, the UK and EU issued a joint statement saying co-operation was important and they are working on specific measures to expand vaccine supply. At the same time, the number of diseases is rising in many European countries and lockouts are expanding. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel suspended a five-day lockout over Easter, saying it would be a “mistake”.
