A message to Israel? Iran unveils new naval missile base

Iran today (Monday) uncovered an underground missile base on the southern coast, the Iranian Fars news agency reported, along with documentation of the large tunnel facility and a variety of naval missiles.

The secret site was first revealed during a visit by the Revolutionary Guards commander, General Hussein Salami, where the missile base was inaugurated. In a speech to the servants at the base, Salami said: “Our navy has a wide range of capabilities and weapons and a large, high-quality and decisive missile force. We can defend our shores and our ships everywhere.”

The Fars news agency reported that the base includes ballistic missiles, naval cruise missiles and other weapons such as electronic weapons. The agency claimed that the weapons allowed accurate firing from a facility that was protected from enemy attacks and could hide preparations for massive missile fire.

The timing of the Iranian bragging is not coincidental, over the weekend Iran admitted that a ship carrying its flag was attacked in the Mediterranean and officials in the country blamed Israel for the action. Various media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal and the London Times, have reported that in the past two years Israel has carried out a series of attacks on Iranian vessels carrying oil and weapons from Iran to various parts of the Middle East.
