Hackers take on an Israeli financial company, demanding counterfeit money

A hacking group said Saturday that they have managed to hack into the servers of Israeli car financing company KLS Capital and steal a lot of consumer information.

The Black Shadow group began releasing large chunks of the stolen data on Saturday, which included information about KLS customers in Israel and abroad.

Ynet has discovered that the hackers also deleted a lot of information about the KLS servers.

The hackers on Saturday demanded that KLS pay a $ 1.9 million compensation in Bitcoin (to the value of $ 570,000), a claim denied by the finance company.

KLS said it received initial help from the government’s cyber security branch to stop the attack and attempt to steal money from the company.

The National Cyber Security Authority said after the attack on KLS that even small companies needed to have strong defenses against potential spies.

Meanwhile, Dr. Harel Menashri, head of the Cyber division at Holon Institute of Technology and a member of the Shin Bet home security service, said he believes the ransom request of the hackers was intended to hide the real cause of the attack.

According to Menashri, the real goal of the hackers was to embarrass Israeli companies by exposing their security vulnerabilities.

“It is quite clear that the attack was not carried out for ransom reasons as the hackers say but there are other reasons at hand,” Menashri said.

“The robot is a fog screen just like the events at Shirbit.”
