Microsoft has announced the platformMicrosoft Mesh, The company’s new mixed reality platform that allows people around the world to connect to a shared virtual world or as part of the reality around them and make encounters not only in video calls, but as an interactive experience with users’ projections based on their looks or animated avatars. The company even demonstrated the augmented reality game Pokemon Go as part of its presentation.
The easiest way to describe Microsoft Mesh is to think of it as a combination of the company’s Microsoft Teams platform and a multiplayer MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), with a combination of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), Or as Microsoft calls it – MR (Mixed reality).
It allows participants to be partners in the virtual world as the characters that represent them and also to see the participants as part of the reality around them. While most of us are accustomed to the reality of working remotely with multi-participant video conferencing sessions, Microsoft’s vision goes to the next level, multi-participant virtual sessions.

Microsoft’s new mesh platform is not limited to using the company’s HoloLens 2 glasses only, but allows the use of any compatible set of virtual reality glasses, as well as tablets, mobile devices and computers. While the best experience will come from using virtual reality goggles, users will be able to join virtual encounters in Mesh using any platform available to them, with the company hoping to attract developers to the platform to create new tools for collaborating in the virtual reality it has created.
As part of its presentation on the Mesh platform, Microsoft in collaboration with Niantic demonstrated what reality looks like with the Hololens goggles along with characters from the popular AR game Pokemon Go. You can see the Pokemon roaming in the park where the presenter of the video is, who even controls various elements in the game through menus displayed in augmented reality. Microsoft emphasized that this is proof of the feasibility of options that will come in the future only, and not a game that will soon reach end users.
The new Microsoft Mesh platform is the first swallow in the field that is expected to evolve in the future along with the realm of augmented reality, where users will be able to leverage the technology to have much more open and flexible virtual encounters than multi-participant video calls available today. All that remains to be seen is how the market will respond to the new platform and whether it will be able to grow and develop in the future.
