Dutch author Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, winner of the 2020 International Booker Prize, has gone out as a translator of Amanda Gorman’s poems. Fur has gone earlier since the Dutch publisher Meulenhoff announced that The discomfort of the evening he translates the Gorman collection The hill we climb from English to Dutch. The point of controversy is choosing a writer who was not Black.
Report in The Keeper quoting a piece by journalist and activist Janice Deul Janice Deul in the Dutch daily Volkskrant, “An incredible choice, in my opinion and that of many others who expressed their pain, harassment, anger and the disappointment through social media… Isn’t – at least – a missed opportunity [have hired] Marieke Lucas Rijneveld for this work? They are white, unconventional, have no experience in this field, but according to Meulenhoff still the ‘dream interpreter’? ”
At the time of the briefing Rijneveld agreed with the decision, prompting social media to express their views. “At a time when polarization is on the rise, Amanda Gorman shows the young voice the power of the word of Speech, the power of resolution, the power of someone who looks to the future instead of looking down. When I was asked to translate I could only say it and get behind it. ”

However, they released a statement removing the post. Their statement, surrounded by The Keeper reads, “I am shocked by the turmoil involved in getting Amanda Gorman out of the message and I understand the people who feel hurt by Meulenhoff ‘s choice to ask me. I had been delighted to translate Amanda’s work, seeing it as the greatest work to maintain her strength, tone and style. However, I understand that I am capable of thinking and feeling like that, where there is not much. I still wish her comments reached as many readers as possible with open hearts. ”
Meulenhoff later concluded that it was Gorman’s decision to select Rijneveld as translator. They will, however, try to learn from this program. “We want to learn from this by talking and walking a different path with the new perspectives,” Maaike le Noble, general director of the publishing house, said in the report. “We look for a team that works with them to bring Amanda’s words and message of hope and inspiration to the best possible translation and spirit. ”
Gorman, the 22-year-old poet, played at the founding of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Her poem was unanimously summoned placing it firmly on the literary landscape, causing a huge leap on her social media following, her Amannan cover, and produced by the IMG Models group. Her yellow Prada dress and headgear from the event were also appreciated.
