The rematch between WBC interim heavyweight titleman Alexander Povetkin and Dillian Whyte has been postponed until March 27 and will now take place in Gibraltar, Matchroom Sports announced Saturday.
The fight was first scheduled for March 6 in London. It was moved due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions in the UK.
“In the current environment we need to think on our feet,” Matchroom Sports managing director Eddie Hearn said in a press release. “We did everything to try to make March 6 happen, but with the new travel restrictions it was impossible. Now we have something out of the box, questionable, and a unique setting for one of the heavy fights of the year. “
The event will be broadcast in the US on DAZN.
In their first fight on August 22, Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs), 40, from Russia, survived two hits in Round 4 to stop Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs ), 32, of England in the fifth round with a stunning left uppercut that sent Whyte to the canvas for good.
The winner of the replay would get a title shot against Tyson Fury, the WBC heavyweight world champion at the end of 2021.
