Syrian television reports today (Wednesday) that contacts are taking place between the Israeli government and the Assad government in Syria, mediated by a senior Russian, for the release of an Israeli woman who accidentally crossed the border and was arrested by security forces in the country. According to reports, Israel is expected to release two Syrian citizens imprisoned in Israel in return. In Israel, the details were confirmed.
The two prisoners held in Israel, “residents of the occupied Golan” (the language of the announcement), are Nihal al-Mukat and Dahab Kamuz. The two are imprisoned in Israel after crossing the border from Syria and being convicted in connection with the Hezbollah organization. Following this, National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat took off for Moscow, with the aim of reaching an agreement on the exchange of prisoners.
The special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Syria, Alexander Lebrentiev, was asked a short time ago by the prestigious Russian newspaper “Kommersant”, what is the subject of the contacts that have taken place in recent days between Israel and Russia. According to Brentiev, “The contacts are taking place and should be welcomed because during them it is possible to reach agreements on preventing Israeli attacks in Syrian territory.”
This comes in the wake of yesterday’s secret government meeting, which dealt with an important security issue, and took place frontally and offline, like other government meetings in recent times. At the meeting, it was clarified to the ministers that in the last two weeks there have been close contacts with the senior Russian leadership on the issue of a sensitive humanitarian issue in Syria.
