As Melbourne residents suffered more the second day of a five-day snap lock in the state, some came as a surprise to the skies.
As seen in the video above, a meteor went out over the sky in a spectacular explosion of light around 10.41pm on Sunday night.
The meteor coincided with Valentine’s Day.
Some canny viewers waited for the meteor while others captured the moment of security film out in front of their house.
Josh O’Neil, 24, a resident of Korumburra in South Gippsland Victoria, was sitting in his living room when he saw a flash of light.
“Outside kind of lit. Out of the corner of my eye I thought it was lightning, ”he said 7NEWS.com.au.
However, Josh knew it was not lightning when the light “came in” and everything turned green.
He said he saw “a great green light, just passing through the skies, and it exploded”.
But Josh didn’t have the drama he expected – there was no “big bang”, just dead silence.
Josh recalled that his family had installed security cameras and rushed to see what was captured on film.
“It came down pretty straightforward in the video,” he said, describing the scene he also gave to 7NEWS.com.au.
Josh’s mother, Tracey Mitchell, described the incident as “very cool”.
“Everything is as bright as daylight,” she said.
“If you put your hand on the horizon, the explosion was about a hand’s breadth from the horizon.”
The meteor was not only visible from Korumburra but also to Melbourne residents, with one man uploading his photos to Youtube.
Facebook groups were flooded with comments from people who saw the object from the outside.
Some even saw it from the NSW Central Coast and those overlooking the Tasmanian Bass Strait also got a glimpse.
