Microsoft’s Edge extension store is believed to have hosted “illegal copies” of classic games such as Mario Kart 64, Super Mario Bros. and several other titles such as Sonic the hedgehog, Pac-Man and Tetris. Even the IP is owned by Microsoft Minecraft there were unofficially available.
According to The Verge, the developers were behind these lists no Microsoft, Nintendo, or “any other” affiliated parties. Although the pages were taken down immediately, it seems that some user reviews for these game uploads go back to last October – meaning those lists are gone to hitherto unconsciousness.
Adding to this, the official Twitter account “Microsoft Edge Dev” has reportedly gone to great lengths to promote these “vintage” games. Here is an image, apparently taken before the tweet was deleted, calling all Mario Kart lovers:
One bold person by the name @olynative on Twitter he took advantage of the Mario Kart 64 extension and said he would download a ROM of the game.
Some of the now unavailable lists seem to have clarified that they were not affiliated with the game companies that made the titles. Of course, this still doesn’t cut it.
“IMPORTANT: This emulator is not affiliated with or secured by Nintendo. All graphics, games and other multimedia are copyrighted to their owners and authors. This game is for ALL users. follow Mario! “
Again, action was taken and most of those game lists were removed. We suspect Nintendo ninjas would have seen too much if they had come across them. An emergency was called off.
