Fernando Alonso, the Spanish Formula 1 driver of the French Alpine team, was injured in a car accident in the Lugano area of Switzerland after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle.
Alonso immediately goes to the nearby hospital and is treated there while fully conscious. According to reports in Europe, Alonso, who is planning his comeback next month in the French team uniform, suffers from several fractures in his body including a jaw fracture but there is no official report and confirmation of this from the hospital nor from his team.
If the 39-year-old Alonso’s injuries do include fractures, he will likely be forced to postpone his return to the track, at least for the pre-season training days and possibly even the first race to be launched in 44 days.
An official report is expected this morning, after Alonso will undergo several tests and his condition will be carefully diagnosed. Alonso is the second driver injured in a bicycle accident before it was the Italian Alessandro Zanardi who was seriously injured in the accident while pedaling his hand bike. Another world champion who lost his life in a car accident while cycling in recent years is American Nicki Hayden who won the MotoGP Championship. See Less.
