EA is taking the first steps to acquire the key Glu Mobile, which is best known for its casual mobile games starring celebrities like Gordon Ramsey, Katie Perry, Kim Kardashian, and the baseball game MLB Tap Sports. The value of the deal is estimated at $ 2.4 billion, and EA said it is in the final stages of the process and is expected to close during the second quarter of the year.
Glu’s gaming model is based on quite a few free games, which usually provide a high source of income through the maintenance of a micro-payment system. This is a model that investors at EA have indicated that they are interested in adopting more than once. Andrew Wilson, EA CEO commented on the deal: “The mobile field is just continuing to evolve and grow, and with the combination of talent that the Glu team brings with us we will be able to expand our mobile field.”
Currently, the number of players active in EA’s mobile games is 100 million players per month. Although it owns quite a few successful mobile games such as FIFA, Sims, Star Wars and many other brands, according to Andersen – the acquisition of Glu will allow it to complete its expansion and maximize its capabilities in the mobile industry.
It seems that EA is planning a significant expansion not only in the mobile field: the acquisition of GLU is not the company’s first in recent weeks, when very recently it also acquired the developer of racing games Codemasters.
