The new version of Microsoft Edge is here … but so is the old legacy version of Microsoft Edge – until April 13. At that point, the new Windows update will permanently remove the legacy version of Edge from PCs.
Microsoft introduced the new version of Microsoft Edge as part of the Windows 10 Update October 2020. Now this is the end of the line for the older version of Microsoft Edge.
This patch will affect almost all versions of Windows, from version 1803 (Update April 2018) all the way through version 20H2, aka Windows 10 update October 2020. Officially, support for the legacy version of Edge expires on March 9, after which the browser will no longer receive security updates.
Redmond promises that Edge ‘s legacy options will carry over to the new version of Edge – if the older version of Edge was docked inside the taskbar, so should the new version. But if users want to keep the retirement version around for an old time, they won’t have that option: The new patch completely removes the older version of Edge.
Users retain the option not to skip the piece (not yet named) completely. Microsoft warns otherwise: “We do not recommend not skipping this update,” Microsoft said in a blog post. “Windows malicious monthly security updates provide critical updates to the Windows 10 operating system.”
Microsoft’s latest Edge browser offers a major update over the older Edge. Microsoft built the new Edge upon Chromium, the same basics as Google Chrome, and many Chrome features – such as the massive ecosystem of plug-ins – are available as a result.
The vendor has also added new features, such as a password generator, which is not in the legacy Edge. To be fair, the older Edge offered some really nice improvements in PDF and e-book capabilities, which Microsoft is slowly adding to the new version of Edge.
