Joe Root made history as the first player to score a double hundred in his 100th Test when he hit a stunning 218 as England dominated day two of the first Test against India.
The England captain started the day at 128 and appeared in full control through this incredible blow as he lifted his fifth 200-plus score in Test cricket, reaching the milestone in style by launched Ravi Ashwin for a long time for six.
His 377-ball watch was finally ended early in the afternoon session as Shahbaz Nadeem (2-167) gained lbw, shortly after Ollie Pope (34) fell in the same manner as Ashwin (2-132) .
Ishant Sharma (2-52) then took two wickets in two balls to move to 299 in Tests but Dom Bess (28no) and Jack Leach (6no) saw England to 555-8 at the close, with full support from enterprising Ben Stokes 82 in position 124 with Root early in the day.
England started the morning 263-3 with the aim of building on their first impressive day, with Stokes new to the ditch.
After a smooth start to his innings, the round player surprised everyone, including the bowler, when he put his 16th ball back over Ravi’s head. Ashwin for six – a bullet that looked like the driving force of the day to life.

Ashwin got a couple of quick turns out of the rough to keep Stokes on toes but it was only when Nadeem was brought into the attack that things started to happen.
England had caught up with him and Washington Sundar on the first day and tried to do so again but with a little help from the pitch, the left-arm spinner was able to fight back.
Ashwin changed heads and although India lost two reviews in two batches, for lbw shouted off Stokes when he clearly had an attempt at a rebound and then Root, the ball that was show crossing the top, that was the beginning of a period of Indian Weightlifting.
Stokes was relegated twice in the next two appearances, on 31 and 32, difficult chances from Ashwin off his own bowling and Cheteshwar Pujara off Nadeem going down. The left-hander almost ran out of Root as well, just a bad throw saving the England captain over after forcing him to reach 150 for the 10th time in Trials.

Stokes continued to fight, however, pressing Nadeem back with a backhand sweep for four to top his 23rd Fifth Test.
The 92 stand was at lunchtime and reaching three figures early in the afternoon session, Root hit Nadeem through the covers for four to bring him to 99 before working singles.
It was Stokes who remained the main striker, however, giving Nadeem power back for a long time for the third six innings and moving into a hundred-year view before he tried to slog-sweep the same bowler for another and get a real summit to Pujara in the depths.
That brought the returning Pope to the center and although he took his time courting situations after six months out of the sidelines, Root made sure England kept kicking and he was approaching his double age.

England were adamant not to let such a strong situation slip and a 48-run partnership between Jos Buttler and Bess stopped falling and gave them 500 per cent.
They needed more than a little luck to get there although Buttler headed for Sundar, the ball went through to Rishabh Pant behind the stocks and all the Indian players went up to catch them behind. .
Buttler stood his ground however and, after using their reviews, there was nothing India could do when the umpire remained motionless. To add to their sense of injustice, Buttler hit the next ball through the covers for four.
India chose not to bring in the new third ball and paid off when Ishant returned and bowled Buttler (30) when the England man should make arms, the ball returning nicely and hit the top.
Jofra Archer went the next ball, slow to get ahead and also lost his stump, but Leach kept the hat-trick ball out.
The guests would have expected to fold the innards quickly but were overwhelmed by Bess, who kept the score moving by five boundaries and also benefited from a dramatic reduction by Rohit Sharma, and Leach, who England saw through to stumps, with a chance to increase their total later on day three.
