NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the results of this year’s head coach hiring cycle were not what the league expected, a year after he promised to increase diversity in the career.

Two of the seven head coaching jobs were filled with minorities after the New York Jets hired Robert Saleh, whose parents are from Lebanon, and Houston Texans hired David Culley, who is black.

There are now five minor coaches in the league – an increase of one head coach from 2020.

“That wasn’t what we expected and that’s not what we expect going forward,” Goodell said ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs in Tampa , Florida.

The NFL introduced a new step to award two third-round draft picks to a team that develops a minority candidate hired by another franchisee as head coach or general manager.

“For us, we want to keep looking and seeing what went right, what went wrong,” Goodell said.

“That has to happen through individual discussions with candidates – both successful and unsuccessful candidates – the clubs, and trying to understand what exactly went right and what went wrong.

“Not the results we wanted.”

Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs who has now led the team to two consecutive Super Bowls, was seen as a prime candidate to build a head coaching career.

Head coach Andy Reid said earlier in the week that it was “curious” to know why Bieniemy, who is black, was neglected.

“This guy doesn’t miss a beat,” Reid said.

“So I don’t understand everything, I’m not an owner, I don’t sit in those meetings to interview head coaches, but I would tell you that someone anyone who gets it when they get it is very lucky. . “

Teams hired three black general managers: Martin Mayhew with the Washington Football Team, Brad Holmes with the Detroit Lions and Terry Fontenot with the Atlanta Falcons.
