A man has been arrested after throwing a Molotov cocktail near a synagogue in London.

Police closed Golders Green Road in the north of the capital and other emergency services ran to the scene.

Officers arrested the man ‘for a number of offenses’ but said no one was injured.

West Hendon councilor Alex Prager tweeted: ‘Police and fire brigade at the site. Appears to be involved in a Molotov cocktail next to a synagogue on The Riding. ‘

One man said: ‘Why did he wait all that time to throw away that little bottle? ‘Dozens of police and firefighters can be seen running down the road.

A witness told Jewish News: ‘There were a lot of police of various kinds and a chopper going to hear.

‘The road from Ravenscroft to Be Kosher was closed and we saw riot police and several unmarked cars.

‘Police have described the situation as’ life and death’ but we have not heard any further details. ‘

And Peter Phillips told the Ham and High: ‘We’ve seen all the emergency vehicles turn around. The fire brigade must have had about 15 police vehicles, an ambulance.

‘We saw the first two police cars turn up and people ripped out of a flat upstairs marking after a car was wiped off, they went straight after it. ‘

The Community Safety Trust, a charity that helps the UK fight security and antisemitism, said it was aware of the incident.

He said in a tweet: ‘CST is aware of an ongoing incident in Golders Green that the emergency services are attending and apparently.

‘We are working with the police to find out the nature of the incident, which is not clear at the moment. Try to avoid the area while the police control the situation. ‘

Police said: ‘Police were called at 12.28 to the #GoldersGreen Riding # NW11 to report a safety concern.

Officers were present and found a man with a vehicle. The man is believed to have set fire to something before being arrested.

‘None of the public or officers believe they were injured. Investigations are ongoing.

The man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offenses. As a warning, nearby roads were closed. ‘
