The England international has not been involved with the Red Devils since January 2020, with a long road to recovery after knee surgery
Phil Jones has been given hope that he may still have Manchester United’s future, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer leaving the door open for the injured defender after 12 months of “sad” sidelines .
England ‘s last international goal for the Red Devils came back on 26 January 2020.
He hasn’t gotten out at all since he started and scored in an FA Cup clash with Tranmere, with a real knee problem keeping the 28-year-old sticking on the medical board.
Jones was already struggling for game time at that level, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof providing tough competition for places at Old Trafford.
Only eight rounds were seen in the 2019-20 campaign before they had to undergo surgery, and no minutes were taken this term after slowing down a long road to recover.
Solskjaer is feeling for the midfielder, who has been with United since 2011, and says there could still be a place for him in his plans if he returns to fitness and form.
The Red Devils boss has told reporters about Jones ahead of the Premier League for his side against Southampton on Tuesday: “It’s sad. It’s the worst thing for a football player.
“When you have an injury that takes away your passion and gives you the opportunity to play football away.
“Phil has been a great backer and was in the World Cup squad two years ago.
“It was great when I came in and I wish him back in the squad as soon as I can.
“I have been through a serious injury and it may take away your credibility and enjoyment.
“It’s been working so hard to get it back. He’s had a couple of problems, but hopefully we’ll get some news.
“He will be included in the list and hopes to regain fitness sooner rather than later and be available to play.”
Jones was left off United’s squad list for the first half of the 2020-21 season, while fighting his way back from injury, but Solskjaer’s oath to add him to the ranks means that a return to action could be as long as the Red Demon continues to search for silverware on many fronts.
