The Knesset convenes at this time (Sunday) to discuss the Fines Law. It is expected to approve on second and third reading the aggravation of reports of breaches of corona guidelines.

According to the bill approved by the Constitution Committee, the maximum fine that can be determined in regulations regarding the violation of certain restrictions will be increased from NIS 5,000 to NIS 10,000.

Among other things, it is proposed to increase the fines for operating a place open to the public or a business, by opening it to the public in violation of the prohibition to operate it, and for violating restrictions regarding a party, conference, ceremony (including religious ceremony), festival, organized trip, sports event, entertainment or An art show.

Raising the maximum fine will make it possible to determine the level of fines according to the size of the business, the number of participants in the event, the number of students in the educational institution and the like. It is also proposed to expand the possibility of issuing closure orders, including to educational institutions.

As you may recall, the Likud’s decision to support the original version of the law proposed by Blue and White provoked anger and resentment in the ultra-Orthodox parties. According to them, “it is unfortunate that there are those who insist on sanctifying politics over a matter-of-fact and professional discussion.”

In protest of the decision to bring the original wording approved in the first reading for approval by the Constitution Committee, the representatives of the ultra-Orthodox parties decided to boycott the discussions of the Knesset Committee and the Constitution Committee.

Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin announced last Friday that the Knesset plenum would convene today to finally approve the law, after all the factions agreed, he said.
