Israel is currently treating the explosion as a terrorist incident, an official at the country’s foreign ministry told CNN. The official said it is too early to say with certainty whether the embassy is the target but “this is one of the investigative guidelines at this stage.”
A spokesman for Israel’s foreign ministry said earlier that no casualties had been blown up and no damage had been done to the building.
Delhi police said the windows of three vehicles were the only objects damaged in the blast, adding that “first impressions” were a “rude attempt to create awareness”.
India’s foreign minister, S. Jaishankar, said he had spoken to Israeli foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi and assured him that the explosion was being taken seriously.
“He assured the Israeli embassy and diplomats the greatest possible protection. Matter is being investigated and no effort will be spared to find the critics,” Jaishankar said in a tweet.
Friday marks the 29th anniversary of the establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and India.
