Netflix is once again the top contender at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards
NEW YORK – Netflix is once again the top contestant at the 26 GLAAD Media Awards, capturing film nods for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Prom,” a comedy series announcement for “Dead to Me” and “Big Mouth” And TV drama notes for “The” Umbrella Academy ”and“ Ratched. ”
Netflix for the past few years has led the annual GLAAD nomination, which honors the media for fair and accurate representations of LGBTQ people. HBO Max followed this year with nine nominations, while Amazon, Hulu and HBO got four.
The Hallmark Channel was first nominated for “Christmas House,” the network’s first holiday film starring a gay protagonist. GLAAD also noted that transgender characters featured prominently in “9-1-1: Lone Star,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Saved by the Bell,” “Big Mouth” and “Supergirl . ”
The winners of the awards will be announced at a prestigious event recorded in April.
Several categories increased from five to 10 nominees to recognize expanding levels of diverse LGBTQ representation across several media genres.
“This year’s nominees remind us that even in times of political and cultural division, LGBTQ representation and visibility can create enlightenment, entertainment, and lasting change,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement.
The group also noted that Ryan Murphy created, directed and nominated six nominees this year – “The Prom,” “Boys in the Band,” “Book Circus,” “Hollywood,” “Ratched” and “9 -1-1: Lonely Star. ”
Streaming services saw a total of 58 nominees, with cable receiving 29 nominations, and broadcast networks receiving 14. GLAAD also honored “Out,” Pixar’s animated short film on Disney + featuring the first Pixar’s LGBTQ ever story, and “After Forever,” a series of Emmy-winning short form on Amazon Prime Video that follows a group of gay friends.
In the recent “Where We Are on TV” report, GLAAD found that LGBTQ and the inclusion of sex on television has declined slightly this season due to delays and closures caused by a pandemic COVID-19.
Music artists who have won GLAAD nominations this year include Adam Lambert, Brandy Clark, Halsey, Kehlani, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Pabllo Vittar, Peppermint, Ricky Martin and Sam Smith.
