SAN DIEGO – Jon Rahm pulled out of American Express last week with what he described as a “tweak” he suffered while in the gym, but don’t expect the injury to be blurred that makes it slow at Torrey Pines.
“That exploded out of proportion like crazy,” Rahm said. “I think he was overdoing it in the winter, he might not have rested. I could have played last week. I decided not to just because I didn’t want to force it; I just wanted to be 100 percent sure it would be good for this week. “

Rahm’s focus on this week’s Farmers Insurance Competition is easy to understand because of his history of ocean form. In four starts, World No. 2 has won (2017), finished running (2020) and tied for fifth (2019). His worst finish was T-29 in ’18.
“I’ve always marked a date on the calendar. I love this week. It’s a big city, ”he said. “I’m looking forward to it, such a special place, hoping I can keep up the good play I’ve had before.”
Despite Rahm’s withdrawal from the American Express he remains the favorite of Torrey Pines and then Rory McIlroy, who finished tied for the third year last year on the South Course.
