As Carr mentions, AC75s have sailed to the next level and are a kind of new boat, the world has never seen before.

“We use the same technology as aircraft but our wings, or hydrofoils, are underwater,” said Carr.

“BRITANNIA can reach speeds of 50 knots (60 mph). These speeds are fast for powerboats, and so far, unheard of for sailboats and out of sight of engines.
“It is the boiling that has allowed us to make this quantum leap in speed; by reducing the contact surface with the water the traction is greatly reduced.”

Next question, how on earth do you get a seven-ton boat to lift out of the water in the first place?
Well, in the same way that a plane has to get up to speed before it can leave a runway, the AC75 has to reach about 14 nautical miles in order for the releases to get the force the boat needs.
“Our 87-foot main sail gives us the impetus to get going,” explains Carr. “It uses forces in the same way as an airplane, but it stands upright.
