Volkswagen is the world’s largest automaker, with global sales of 9.3 million vehicles in 2020 – only 2.5% of those sales were electric vehicles.
While Volkswagen has far more to sell, Tesla’s market value is about eight times greater.
Diess joined Twitter in December but posted his first tweet Wednesday. In less than 24 hours the tweet had picked up 4,400 appearances and already had 12,900 followers – a fraction of Musk’s 42.6 million followers, but it wasn’t bad for the first day.
So far Musk has not responded publicly to Diess’s tweet.
The Tesla CEO is certainly fond of touring other manufacturers, but he had been tweeting nice things about Diess and VW in the past.
In September 2019, when someone tweeted a story criticizing Diess and Volkswagen to Musk, he replied, “Herbert Diess is doing more than any major car maker to go electric. Good for the world to come first. For all its worth, it has supported me. “
And last October, in response to another tweet about Diess, Musk wrote: “Diess is doing his best to move in the right direction, but he is in a difficult position with so many constituencies for his No way to make everyone happy. “
And asking about the tweet, Michael Manske, a spokesman for Volkswagen, also noted suggestions from Tesla and Musk that Diess has made previously.
“Herbert Diess and Elon Musk have a good relationship and they respect each other,” he said. “The competition with Tesla is accelerating Volkswagen’s transformation.”
