In September 2016, Miranda revealed how a bad relationship breakdown left her devastated – until Peggy came into her life.

The Call of Midwife star, who rarely talks about her personal life, was left ‘lonely, lonely and depressed’ after her separation, but was dragged through thanks to her pocket.

In an excerpt from her book Peggy And Me, the Devon native said she believed she would never like it again.

She said: ‘By the time Peggy appeared in my life I had just ended a long-term relationship and Hart’s heart was not in the best shape.

‘And I was thinking maybe this dog is going to turn him around. I realized that being single is better than being in a relationship with someone who is not kind, loving and trusting. I had someone who liked me. It didn’t matter that he was just a dog.

Owning Peggy was the only thing that qualified me as an adult of any kind; without it, despite being a year or two into my 30s, I only felt a little more than the sixth man who had gone through and brought someone at random and to invisible work. ‘
