If you happen to be a Netflix subscriber and have a pair of AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, this news is for you. After Disney + and HBO Max, Netflix could add spatial audio support to AirPods Max and AirPods Pro users.
The streaming giant is said to be testing the feature since December, according to a report from iPhoneSoft, which names anonymous Netflix developer. It is claimed that Netflix may launch the feature with a “small catalog” in the spring. Apple’s own Apple TV + service already supports spatial audio for the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max mobile phones.
What is spatial audio and how does it work?
For those who aren’t aware, spatial audio is the feature built into the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Basically, the spatial audio feature offers a “theater-like experience” for audio while watching a movie. Spatial audio effects sound around the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max as if the sound were coming from a surround sound speaker than from your AirPods. This results in a more immersive sound that changes automatically, thanks to the ability of AirPods to track the movements of your head.
With AirPods Max, Apple is out to create a new section where others will play catchup
Spatial audio is currently working on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. To use spatial audio, you need to pair your AirPods with an iPhone 7 or later. The feature also works with several compatible iPads including the 12.9-inch iPad Pro of the third generation, the 11-inch iPad Pro, the iPad Air of the third generation, the iPad in the sixth generation, and the fifth-generation iPad mini. Obviously, all of these devices need to run on iOS 14 or the latest version of iPadOS.
Netflix supports spatial audio showcasing the adoption of Apple’s 360 audio technology. In a way, Apple is bringing spatial audio to Dolby Atmos for Sony headphones and 3D audio. More and more headphones and earbuds are expected to support 360 audio. Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro’s recently launched wireless earbuds also feature 3D spatial audio.
