Rinku Majumder, PhD, Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the LSU Health School of Medicine New Orleans, has a National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, $ 2.5 million grant over four years to help reduce the high risk of stroke for obese women who take estrogen birth control pills.
Thrombosis, bloodless bleeding without injury is a major cause of stroke and other diseases. Compared to women with normal weight, obese women who use estrogen blockers are 25 times more likely to experience thrombosis. “

Dr. Majumder has previously discovered genetic factors that link thrombosis to obesity and estrogen. This grant will support further research to better understand this relationship and identify targets to prevent or reduce the high risk of stroke due to thrombosis for women in this group.
“We are working to identify the biochemical details of this link,” said Dr. Majumder. reduces the risk of thrombosis for millions of women. “
The project will start on 15 January 2021.
