The U.S. government announced this morning (Monday) that it has declared the “Ansar-Allah” group of Houthi rebels in Yemen a terrorist organization. Following the announcement, the U.S. is expected to impose a long line of sanctions on the organization’s assets and operatives.
Ansar-Allah has been fighting in Yemen since 2004, and took part in the overthrow of then-President Ali Abdullah Salah. The organization is strongly supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, and is considered a crucial part of the Shiite resistance axis, alongside Hezbollah in Lebanon, Syria and the Shiite militias in Iraq.
Terrorist designations of Ansarallah in Yemen confront its terrorist activity and seeks to deter further malignant activity by the Iranian regime in the region.
