It is a league of 32 starts. Cam Newton believes that a place among them is moving forward.
But the quarterback is going to be a free agent in March and will turn 32 in May. It will keep its options open. The New England Patriots will do the same.
“Honestly, it’s too early to tell, and that’s as honest as I can be,” Newton said on WEEI’s Greg Hill Exhibition when asked if he would consider a back-to-back opportunity. support in New England or elsewhere. “Do I think I have start-up talent? Absolutely. Do I think a lot of the things I did have been reduced – not the team perspective, maybe the media outlook? Absolutely. Do people care about my feelings? Of course not. So, I mean, it is. I understand my role. I understand that it has been extensively researched. And we only have 32. ”
The final round of the 2020 regular season reached Sunday at Gillette Stadium against the New York Jets. It saw him go 21-of-30 passing for 242 yards with touchdowns to the backs of James White and Sony Michel backs and tight end rookie Devin Asiasi.
He ripped for 79 yards on 11 attempts while setting the Patriots franchise record at the set with a 49-yarder down the right. And the former NFL MVP also captured the first round of his career with permission from wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.
In what became a 28-14 win for New England, Newton became the fifth quarterback with at least three touchdown passes and a goal scored in a single game in league history. These marks placed on January 3, 2021 in the company of Ray Buivid on December 5, 1937, Frank Ryan on October 30, 1960, Jim McMahon on September 29, 1985 and Deshaun Watson on December 1, 2019.
Newton, who said the opportunity to stay in head coach Bill Belichick’s plans would feel “amazing,” plans to take the time to reevaluate.

“I have a lot of weapons in the barrel to get better at this point, and that’s what I’m going to focus on doing,” Newton said. “I have my health. Maybe this is the first healthy offseason I’ve been thinking of, shucks, around five, six years? I’m going to make the most of it. I have to work on my mechanics obviously. I have to throw the football faster than the last part of last year. Those are the things I will be focusing on as we prepare for the offseason. ”
The Patriots are now on their way. In the next overview is table 7-9. Ahead is the No. 15 overall pick in the NFL draft and, accordingly Miguel Benzan at PatsCap, the flexibility of $ 60.5 million in cap replacement.
Newton’s one-year contract with New England featured a $ 1.05 million base salary that stood as the minimum for his accrued service period. It featured $ 550,000 promised to go with $ 700,000 in roster bonuses per game and up to $ 5.75 million in available promotions.
The ex-Carolina Panther started 15 games after the deal became official in July. He completed 65.8% of his throws for 2,657 yards with eight runs and 10 catches. He ran for 592 yards along with a dozen touchdowns on 137 carries.
“I look at it like this: I know out of 32 people, I’m not the 32 in that situation,” Newton told WEEI. “So you also have to understand that I am a competitor first. I think the highest level of myself first, as it should be and as anyone should. I know what skills I have. I know what a talent I have. I understand that if I get the chance, there is no one better than me. That’s how I always feel. I also have to feel reasonable about the opportunity that is being presented. ”
The single quarterback currently under contract with the Patriots outside of the 2019 new league year is Jarrett Stidham’s 2019 fourth-quarter pick. Veteran Brian Hoyer is also soon to become a free agent, and Jake Dolegala is a candidate for a futures contract as part of the practice squad.
Newton, who was named team captain weeks after his arrival in Foxborough, said he doesn’t have to be a backup to be a mentor.
“I don’t have to be in a particular position to have my desire for someone to succeed,” he said. “Why can’t you be successful if you get the chance in the first place? That’s how you reduce separation in itself. ”
