A large fire broke out on Sunday in a warehouse where cans of fuel and gas were stored on the border between Lebanon and Syria, injuring seven and causing high explosions, the Lebanese Red Cross and the arm.
The fire broke out in a warehouse in the al-Qasr border area, where the line between the two countries is re-routed. The Lebanese army said the explosions occurred away from one of their checkpoints and none of their members were injured.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire and explosions. Fuel and diesel smuggling is rampant between Lebanon and Syria – many believe the warehouse was used to store contraband, and LBC TV Lebanon reported that the warehouse was used by smugglers. Both countries are going through a tough economic situation and smuggling, which is common along the shared border, has gone up in recent months.
