Diego Costa was an integral part of Atletico Madrid’s success in the previous decade, but now his path in its ranks is over. Today (Tuesday) the Spanish club confirmed that his contract, which was supposed to expire in June 2021, was allowed for personal reasons.
As mentioned, the striker’s contract is supposed to expire at the end of the current season and his place in the squad has long been unsecured, so allowing the contract does not constitute a serious injury for the Ruhiblancos.
It should be noted, in addition, that no reports have emerged at all regarding Costa’s next destination, which is even more confusing. The striker who led Atletico to the surprising championship in 2013/14 and also won the Europa League with it is already 32 years old and it could be that the next team, if there is one, will be the last. Arsenal, who are looking for a striker to strengthen the attack, have been mentioned as one of the candidates to absorb the player.
Costa joined Atletico Madrid from Braga as a promise for the future, but was actually loaned out to several teams and sold to Valladolid where he scored eight goals in 34 appearances in 2009/10. Subsequently, the Colchoneros acquired the striker back and scored 36 goals in all competitions in the 2013/14 season, in which Atletico won the championship and reached the Champions League final. He was then bought by Chelsea where he won the English Championship and returned to the team from the Spanish capital three years later.
Agreed with @diegocosta for the review of his contract. From the club the deseamos much suerte in the next stage of his professional career.
