Canada confirms two cases of a new coronavirus variant first seen in the UK

Canada has confirmed two cases of the transmissible variant of the coronavirus first detected in Britain.

The two confirmed cases are a couple from the Durham Region of Ontario, the largest inhabited area in Canada. The couple has no travel history, publicity or high-risk connections, Xinhua news agency said.

“This reinforces the need for Ontarians to stay at home for as long as possible and to continue to follow all public health advice, including closure measures across the region beginning with the -today, “the Ontario government said Saturday night.

Similarly, the Canadian Public Health Agency said that since the two cases identified did not travel outside of Canada, it is important to follow public health measures and limit contact with others, in order to spread the virus and reduce any of its variables in communities.

The Canadian government banned flights from Britain from 20 December to 6 January 2021, in response to concerns about the Covid-19 variant.
