Microsoft is working on developing a self-designed ARM processor for the company’s servers and Surface computers, according to a website report Bloomberg. While Microsoft is not a new player in the ARM field, the new report indicates that the company is interested in developing an in-house ARM processor and not in continuing to use Qualcomm chips as it has done so far.

While many will point to Apple and the Apple Silicon chip series, including the Apple M1, as the big accelerator of the transition from computing to ARM processors, now owned by Nvidia, one of the X86 processors, ARM processors have been used in the server field for several years Examples like Amazon’s Graviton2 processor, where Microsoft is also not a new player in the field.

Microsoft acquired an ARM architecture license back in 2010 and worked with Qualcomm on developing ARM mobile with a dedicated version of the Windows 10 operating system, when only this year the company introduced the Surface Pro X, which came with a Microsoft SQ2 processor, a customized version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx 5G, which replaced the company’s previous SQ1. According to the current report, Microsoft chooses to carry out in-house development of a dedicated ARM processor instead of relying on an existing Qualcomm ARM processor, with a major focus on a solution for the server market.

While Apple was not the first company to start using ARM processors, the Apple M1 chip accelerated ARM’s ‘arms race’ in computing technology, a race that makes ARM’s current owner of Nvidia a sub-player in the field of computers as a tender player against the duopoly of IT processors. -X86 from Intel and AMD.
