The world at its feet: Lewandowski closed a year in style

Beginning of an articleThis is how a year closes: Bayern Munich lifted its 2020 yesterday (Saturday) in the most characteristic way for it – with a victory, when it is in first place, and all with the help of Robert Lewandowski. Despite a less than good evening than usual, the Bavarians beat Bayer Leverkusen 1: 2, with Lewandowski scoring three minutes into extra time, returning them to the most natural place – the Bundesliga summit.

Bayern’s figures this year are insane: 48 games took place in the presence of Bayern Munich during this calendar year. 42 (!) Of which she finished in victory. Only five more ended in a draw, and only once did Bayern Munich come off the field undefeated. It happened at the end of September, when they hosted Hoffenheim (and our Moans Dabour), and snatched 4: 1. It was their only loss * all year *. Numbers that are unlikely to be recoverable.

But despite the incredible achievement, and the general joy of the Bayern men – what grabbed the headlines at the end of the game against Leverkusen, was actually a replacement. Leroy Sane, who arrived last summer for € 49 million from Manchester City, was replaced after just 36 minutes (!) – after coming on in the 32nd minute and being replaced in the 68th minute. The sites called it an “excessive punishment” for the prestigious acquisition, and Mehmet Schul (formerly a Bayern player and now a commentator) claimed: “It is difficult for Sana to understand this decision.”

Hans-Diet Flick, the Bayern coach, wanted to calm the spirits: “There was no intention to punish Leroy. I wanted to make a change in the game, and bring in Jamal (Musiala). I had to take out one of the three: either Thomas Muller, or the “Serge Gnabry, or Leroy. The other two were in good shape, so I decided to take Leroy out. The goal is for the team to succeed, everything else is in the background. In every situation we support Sanae, in every way possible.”

Aside from this story, of course the one who was at the heart of the headlines is Robert Lewandowski. On Thursday, he was named “FIFA World Footballer of the Year” by FIFA, and yesterday he added a pair – which perfectly closed this year for him. “What a year we went through,” he said at the end, “wish we had another year like this. We lost a lot of balls, but we kept trying until the end. I’m glad that with the last kick, with a little luck, it came in. Compliments come to the whole team.” Lewandowski also referred to Leroy Sana’s story, saying: “He needs time after the injury, I’m holding fingers for him. He’s a great guy.

His teammates also complimented him through his Twitter accounts: David Alaba called him “Employee of the Month,” and Thomas Mueller also sent him congratulations. Here are some of the reactions on the networks to Lewandowski’s perfect finale for 2020.
