UFC 259 results: Petr Yan disqualified for ‘false hoax,’ loses belt to sad Sterling Aljamain

Ultimate Fighting Ultimate Fighting (UFC) Bantamweight champion Petr Yan was desperate to prove that his berserker-style strike was better than starring Aljamain Sterling as the UFC 259’s square two tonight (Saturday, March 6, 2021) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, to settle their score once and for all.

Sterling was more deserving of the 135-pound title chance thanks to the incredible bid he filed over Cory Sandhagen in June 2020, not to mention the five-fight win streak. Yan, however, has a false fist and pushes a wild pace. However, after more than four rounds of action, Yan was disqualified for “deliberate deception” even though he clearly won the fight (watch it).

Sterling fired out of his corner like a rocket, sending a nice kick to the body and pumping a wild injection. Yan maintained his confidence and defended well, but Sterling was able to sneak in a flying knee. Yan started to bounce back, with Sterling lying on a big low kick as he pulled back. Yan fired back, grabbed a kick, and then dropped Sterling in the middle of the cage. He let it back, however, and Sterling forced him to pay minutes later with another flying knee. Halfway through the round Sterling was able to grab a nice takedown, but Yan got back to his feet quickly but not before he ate a fist of a hard hammer on the way up. Yan would drill with a hard bullet on the restart that brought Sterling down, got back to his feet and tried to land a spinning elbow. Yan then let him with a low kick, but Sterling was once again back on his feet. The two got caught in the ground, but Yan quickly escaped to avoid danger. Yan with another late takedown, but Sterling turned back and the two got back to their right feet as the fast-paced first round came to an end.

Sterling came out attacking again for the second verse and quickly finished on his back. Yan stood above him, trying to land ax kicks and low kicks until the referee stood up Sterling. He tried to secure a lazy takedown on the restart, but Yan got nothing out of it. Sterling continued on the fence with one foot, while Yan put his ears down and finally spun out to the middle of the cage. Minutes later they were back in the same position – Sterling desperately wanted that. He lifted one leg off the canvas, but Yan remained standing, sliding in a slender knee to his face. Sterling with a spinning angle on the break, then an elbow standing before trying again to the slaughterhouse. But it was as Yan got the fight to the floor just as the tour ended.

Third round and it was close, but Yan seemed to have the early edge. Sterling pumped the injection and kept pushing pace very early in the round. At the same time, Yan patiently resisted, lying on his hard right hand across the fence. Yan came to a nice kick, with Sterling countering it with a nice mix. Yan put together a nice mix, and then easily put Sterling to the mat. Once back on his feet, Yan landed with a right-hand belt, while Sterling continued to hunt for a sled house across the fence. Yan continued to defend well as Sterling seemed to become lethal, giving up the effort and bouncing to the floor as he spun away. A low kick from Sterling down the piece, with Yan again dumping it to the floor as the round ended.

Going into the tournament rounds, Yan seemed to be the newest and most likely fighter up on the scorecards. He attacked Sterling early to start fourth, and then on his knees in the chest as he was getting back to his feet. Sterling loaded a nice mix to the body, with Yan responding with a hard left hand. Sterling went in for a slow goal and Yan grabbed it with a hard kick. Sterling tried with some spinning attacks, but they were all slow and telegraphed. Yan with a straight left hand, then a knee jumped as Sterling looked as if he was starting to fade. Big knee from Yan, then monster mix upstairs, but Sterling kept moving forward. Sterling came to a high kick, but then fell to his knees. The referee told Yan that Sterling was down, but let out a hell of a knee to his forehead. The action was stopped immediately, with Sterling snatched out on his back in the middle of the cage. He tried to get back to his feet but fell trying to get up. The doctor was then called in to evaluate Sterling, but it was unlikely he would be able to continue. He was given another two minutes to remove the cobwebs, with the ring callers saying the fight should be stopped. And, as Yan was warned before the knee, he was disqualified by the referee.

Sterling was emotional – there was no way to “win” like that. He even refused to take the belt out of the cage, throwing it to the floor with insult. Yan, meanwhile. he stood in his corner, hands on lumps, in disbelief. It looked like a win before the knee. And there is no doubt that there will be an immediate replacement.

Sorry, Mr. Sandhagen.
