After an epidemiological investigation, it became clear that the girl became infected just before the quarantine took effect – and there is a fear that students and teachers who came into contact with her also became infected. Efforts are being made at the Ministry of Health to collect samples from all the isolates and send them to the central laboratory to identify those infected with the mutation and to rapidly cut off the infection chains.
This past weekend we reported that the Ministry of Health had identified 4 infected South African mutants, and they had been sent for immediate isolation. At this stage it is not clear what the level of spread of the mutation in the community is, unlike the British mutation which it is estimated that many have been infected with so far.
