The animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks is finally coming to the UK, several months after its debut on the US streaming service CBS All Access.
The new series is a radical change of pace from what Trekkies has become accustomed to, embracing the zany comic feel directed by Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan.
Set aboard the USS Cerritos, dubbed “one of the least important ships in Starfleet” in the year 2380, the show introduces us to a wacky crew that includes Ensigns Boimler (The Boys’ Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome at Space Force).

Star Trek: Lower Decks UK release date
Star Trek: Lower Decks will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video UK from Friday 22 January 2021.
The first season was released a long time ago in the United States, hitting CBS All Access back in August 2020 to a mixed reception from fans and critics.

The support team on the USS Cerritos is deployed by Space Force Tawny Newsome (Ensign Beckett Mariner), The Boys Jack Quaid (Ensign Brad Boimler), Master of gin Noël Wells (Ensign Tendi) and The Good Place’s Eugene Cordero (Ensign Rutherford).
Other characters are sung by King of the Hill’s Dawnn Lewis (Captain Carol Freeman), Jerry Maguire’s Jerry O’Connell (Commander Jack Ransom), Cleveland Exhibition Fred Tatasciore (Lieutenant Shaxs) and New Girls Gillian Vigman (Doctor T’Ana).
Comedy Paul Scheer also featured in a recurring role on the animated series, playing Lieutenant Commander Andy Billups, chief engineer aboard the USS Cerritos.
Scheer has featured guests in a large number of partners, from recent episodes of The Good Place and Curb Your Enthusiasm, to HBO’s Veep and Fresh Off The Boat.
What is Star Trek: Low Decks all about?
Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place on the USS Cerritos in the year 2380, where a group of progressive fans are reduced to doing work thanks to the lower decks, while the bridge crew takes all the glory they receive.
The series explores the daily lives of our underworld heroes as they get to know each other, while also confronting galactic threats and sci-fi anomalies.
In a press release, Alex Kurtzman outlined McMahan’s first place in the show: “[He] we won our hearts with his first phrase: ‘I want to make a presentation about the people who put the yellow card in food reproduction so that a banana can come out the other end. ‘”
McMahan himself also said that Lower Decks will not be hiring the classic Star Trek trope: “I promise I won’t add a program at the very end which shows that the whole thing happened in a training program. ”
