Sonic boom leaves homes shaken in southwest England ’caused by meteor’

A.

A sonic surge that left homes shaken in the south west of England is said to have been caused by meteor suspicion, it is said.

Residents across Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Somerset would hear on Saturday at around 3pm.

Some locals took to Twitter to talk about the increase and gauge what could have caused it.

One customer commented: “He shook all the widows and the doors in our house. Engaged in sonic shopping but I had never heard of one like that before despite living under the Concords flight path in the past. ”

Dashcam photos from Jersey showed a white climb moving through the skies – around the same time others heard the sonic rise – leading to speculation that the sound was caused by a meteorite.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police told DevonLive that they had received reports of loud noise and that they had suppressed any criminal activity in the area.

But they said: “It’s possible that we’re not sure if it’s an aircraft take off from a military plane.”

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense confirmed that the noise was not believed to be linked to any RAF aircraft.

But astronomer and science writer Will Gater said he believed the bang was caused by a meteor bolide.

In a series of tweets, he said: “I heard (from a trusted source) that I had my first review of the feature in the associated satellite image. #meteor#bolide that was absolutely right. ”
