Review: iPhone buyers prefer battery life over 5G, 3-year upgrade cycle design

A new study looking at what are the most important smartphone features for iPhone and Android users reveals that 5G is at the bottom of the list with longer battery life as the main application. Other findings suggest that around 1 in 3 consumers plan to keep their smartphones for more than three years.

The new study published by BlinkAI this week received feedback from more than 1,000 Americans about the most exciting features when it comes to considering updating their iPhone or Android smartphone. 55% of respondents were iPhone owners and 45% used Android.

While we’ve seen a lot of 5G hype from carriers, Apple with the launch of its first 5G iPhones, and other smartphone makers, the people who took part in this survey say it’s really the at least five similar reasons for updating their device.

Longer battery life was the clear winner with 73% of people picking it up as the most interesting reason to buy a new smartphone.

The second and third most voted were more storage and faster processor at 49 and 43%, respectively. Higher quality photos and videos came a quarter with 5G being a strong feature for updating for only 34% of those surveyed. In particular, iPhone owners cared about at least 5G.

The report also states that renewal visits have extended beyond three years for more than a third of respondents:

The cycle of smartphone replacement has increased in recent years as annual developments on mobile devices have progressed, with more than one-third (35%) of phone users smart Americans plan to keep their machine for more than three years.

Other questions in the survey included which AI usage issues would be more interesting to consumers for the next smartphone and what camera improvements they would like to see.
