Queen’s Christmas Day Surprise – Royal Central

Christmas has been very different in many ways than one for many and the Queen is an exception. This year, the content of her Christmas Day speech will be kept secret until broadcast.

Her Majesty usually records her Christmas Day message and in previous years, excerpts from the speech were shared on 25 December. However, this has led to complaints from some and was taken into account when deciding whether to offer any preview of this year’s Christmas Day message.

Instead, everyone has to wait until 3pm, UK time, on 25 December 2020 to find out what the Queen is going to say. This is one of her most anticipated messages on Christmas Day and comes at the end of a year in which Her Majesty has made two remarkable broadcasts. In April 2020, she delivered a special speech offering hope and peace at the height of the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and in May another broadcast was celebrated to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

In another innovative move, this year’s Christmas Day talk will also be available on Alexa for the first time. But you have to wait until the clock strikes three. The very moment the Queen’s Speech begins on TV and radio, Alexa users can ask their device to “play the Queen’s Christmas Day message”.

Christmas broadcasting is a tradition that dates back to 1932 when the Queen ‘s grandfather, King George V, gave the first Christmas Day speech on radio. This year’s message will be recorded at Windsor Castle where the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh live as the pandemic continues.
