A large number of Android users over the past few hours have come across persistent app closures, with some discovering that Android System WebView will stop the crash.
This issue starts with Android throwing up tips that warn how apps “close. “Applications that are lagging behind and are not currently open are also being affected.
If this bug is affecting your device, all Android apps that use the WebView system, which is responsible for displaying and updating web content with Chrome, will keep up with every few weeks. This includes Gmail – which many users currently see as broken, various Google services, and many other third – party applications.
The immediate solution to this problem involves finding the Play Store list for Android System WebView either by visiting this link directly, or by going to a page “My apps & games”, turn left to the “Installed” tab, and scroll down – it should be one of the first apps. After that, tap on “Uninstall” and quickly confirm that it will appear.
- Launch Google Play Store and go to My Apps & Games
- Open the “Installed” drawer and tap on Android WebView System
- Tap on Uninstall
- Confirm Uninstall
- Restart device
If that doesn’t work for any reason, another course of action goes to System Preferences> Apps & Notifications> View All Apps> Android WebView System> tap on Overflow tab -dot in the top right corner> Updates not installed> OK. This guide is for Android 11 on Pixel phones, but it should be a similar process to other OS versions and OEM devices.
Following these steps should stop the series of crashes, backed by Samsung praising the same action today. It does not affect all users, but it is very widespread across Pixel and other devices.
Google seems to have released a bad update to Android WebView System. While this particular release is buggy, it is important to keep WebView up to date for security solutions once the problem is resolved.
