Plans for a sustainable city on Mars have been announced – construction will begin by 2054

After the end of NASA ‘s permanent victory, the question now seems to be: when will humans live on the red planet? Architect firm Abiboo is offering a response, revealing its plans for the first sustainable city on Mars. The new design includes five cities, including Nüwa which is to become the capital of space. The idea was first presented at the 2020 Mars Annual Convention.

Nüwa will be located on the slope of one of the Martian cliffs and will have abundant water access at Tempe Mensa. This place is also chosen to protect future residents from atmospheric radiation, pressure, meteorites, while still having access to indirect sunlight. It will be just like any big city, with offices, homes and green spaces. Around 250,000 to a million people call Nüwa home.

Five cities will be built in place of one to improve resilience, long-term access to facilities and to add mobility options to its citizens. According to Abiboo, the City of Ablos will be located in the North Pole to make it easier to get to ice while the City of Marineries will be located in the vast canyon of the solar system. The heart of the cities will be sustainable but particularly self-sustaining which means that all facilities are sourced locally.

Talking to Euronews, Abiboo founder Alber Muñoz says, “We had to do a lot of computer – based analysis and work with the scientists to try to understand what the future holds. We have to face challenges that are very specific to the conditions. of Mars, gravity is one of them, which is only a third of gravity on Earth. “

Abiboo worked with SONet Network, an international team of scientists and academics to conceptualize design based on scientific research. He was selected as the finalist for the Mars City State competition organized by the Mars Society. “What we have learned from developing a fully sustainable city on Mars gives us so much knowledge and ideas and insights, about things we could do differently on Earth. land, “said Muñoz.

Muñoz believes the plan is “doable from the technical side” and with all things under consideration, construction is expected to begin by 2054 with the first community starting to live there before 2100.
