Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has been accused of misconduct by the Football Association over a social media post in November.
Cavani used the Spanish term ‘negrito’ on Instagram in response to a congratulatory message after his two goals against Southampton.
The FA statement read on Thursday: “Edinson Cavani was charged with misconduct for breaching the FA’s E3 Rule of Social Media Role on Thursday 29 November 2020.
“ It is alleged that, contrary to FA Rule E3.1, a comment posted on the Manchester United player’s Instagram page was offensive and / or abusive and / or inappropriate and / or brought the game into disrepute. .
It is also argued that the idea includes an “Accelerated Breach”, which is set out in Rule FA E3.2, as it included a reference, however obvious. or comprehensible, in terms of color and / or ethnicity and / or ethnic origin.
“The striker has until Monday 4 January 2021 to respond to the allegation.”
Responding to the allegation, United said: “Manchester United and all our players are fully committed to the fight against racism and we will continue to work with the FA with governing bodies and other organizations, and through the -our own initiatives in that regard.

“We note the FA’s decision today to sue Edinson Cavani for his response on social media to a congratulatory friend’s message after the Southampton game. Edinson and the club were clear that there was no real malicious intent behind the message he sent and apologized as soon as he became aware it could be misused.
“The player and the club will now consider the allegation and respond to the FA accordingly. ”
