A man was arrested by Israeli Police in Jerusalem on Monday for allegedly threatening to sue a political candidate taking part in elections the next day. The candidate, Israeli media reports, was Yesh Atid’s opposition leader and leader Yair Lapid.
The accused Jerusalem assailant in his 30s who commented online said he would physically assault and injure Lapid, even at the expense of his own prison.
His comments, Israeli media reported, were on Walla’s website, and he said he would try to kill Lapid.
The man was reported to police and investigated accordingly.
He was living outside the country but entered Monday, apparently for voting in the elections. Immediately upon landing, he was taken to court for questioning.
Police are expected to demand that the court extend his arrest on Tuesday.
This is not the first death threat against Lapid that has been taken seriously and investigated by the police. In 2012, when Lapid had just left his journalism career behind to pursue politics, he received death threats on his Facebook page from what turned out to be the 16-year-old Bnei Brak who was threatening that Lapid would end as former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, suggesting that he, too, would be assassinated. “The judgment against you is death and anyone who carries it will be blessed,” the teenager wrote at the time.

The 29-year-old from Petah Tikva had demanded that Lapid be hanged “as we would hang Haman and his sons,” referring to the upcoming Purim holiday.
