The midfielder is unsure of what lies ahead for Sergio Ramos, but his own talks on a new contract seem to be going well.
Luka Modric says talks with Real Madrid about a new contract are “going in good direction”.
The Croatian star’s contract expires at the end of the season but reports have claimed that an agreement is in place for a one-year extension.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, now 35, has enjoyed a remarkable campaign for Madrid following early doubts about whether the return of Martin Odegaard would end his involvement.
Of Madrid ‘s midfielders this season, none have scored more goals than Modric (four, level by Casemiro), while only Lucas Vazquez and Toni Kroos have created more goal chances (30) .
Modric has also played the most successful passes ending in the third final (451) of any midfielder in Madrid this term, highlighting his attacking impact under Zinedine Zidane while Odegaard has been struggling for minutes and Eden Hazard for fitness.
Ahead of the Athletic Club’s Supercopa de Espana semi-final clash with Modric, Modric suggested he has enough football left – and that it could be played in the Spanish capital.
“I can’t say much. I’m talking to the club and everything is going in good direction,” he said of his contract negotiations.
“I haven’t changed anything in particular. I work a lot outside of training, I have the same desire to compete, the years are not a problem at all.”
Sergio Ramos ‘future is equally uncertain and Modric was unwilling to offer any indication on the captain’ s plans.
“I can’t put myself next to anyone,” he said. “Sergio is my friend and I want the best for him, so that he can be happy.
“It’s between him and the club. I can’t get involved.”
Modric was happy to offer some advice to Odegaard, however, the 22-year-old has only played nine times this season after returning after securing a good loan with Real Sociedad.
“The last time I spoke to him, I told him that as a player and as a man, I enjoyed fighting for his place in this team, when he plays to make a difference to show that he deserves to be here, “Modric said.
“My advice to him is to work and fight for your place.”
