Former United States Vice President Joe Biden, The leading candidate in the primaries for the presidency of the Democratic Party, objected to the proposal made by his opponents – to condition the financial assistance to Israel on ending the “occupation” and on changing policy towards the Palestinians.
Biden, who may be the Democratic candidate for president and compete with Trump, said that “the idea that we will withdraw the military aid we give to Israel, unless it changes a specific policy – I think it is completely outrageous.”
In a conversation with a Wall Street Journal reporter, Biden promised “I will not do this, and I think it would be a huge mistake.” He added: “I hope some of the contestants running alongside me have not worded it correctly, or their words have been taken out of context.”
The demand to condition Israel’s aid on the displacement of settlement in Judea and Samaria was heard, among others, from the Jewish senator Bernie Sanders, who is running for the presidency of the Democratic Party.
“I am proud to be a Jew and look forward to being the first Jewish president of the United States. If there is a people in the world who knows the dangers of racism and hatred, it is the Jews and from that I learned that it is not anti-Semitic to say that the Netanyahu government is racist.
Sanders added: “We must tell Israel – if you want military aid you need to change the policy towards Gaza. The truth is that part of the $ 3.8 billion of aid should be transferred already now for humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza,” he concluded.
