Indonesian President to be first vaccine volunteer

KUALA LUMPUR

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has announced that when the new coronavirus vaccine arrives in the country, he will be the first volunteer to receive it.

“I am the first person to receive the vaccine,” Widodo said in a statement on Indonesia ‘s presidential palace in Istana Negara’ s Youtube channel on Wednesday.

“After doctors and health workers, the public will be able to get the vaccine,” Widodo said, noting that he made this decision to strengthen Indonesia’s society’s confidence in the vaccine against COVID-19.

Widodo confirmed that the vaccine will be free.

On December 6, Indonesia received 1.2 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Chinese company Sinovac Biotech.

To date, 636,154 people have been infected nationwide with a death toll of 19,248.

Since its first appearance in Wuhan, China in December last year, COVID-19 has claimed more than 1.64 million lives in 191 countries and regions.

More than 74 million cases worldwide have been reported and nearly 42 million recovered, according to figures compiled by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

While the USA, India and Brazil remain the worst performing countries in terms of the number of cases, Europe is in the throes of a second wave of devastating diseases.
