Hodgson criticizes Benteke’s dismissal in a West Ham Palace draw

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hogdson criticized Christian Benteke ‘s decision to dismiss two yellow cards as “ludicrous” as Sebastien Haller’ s stunning kick over West Ham gave the Premier League a 1-1 draw.

Haller has often struggled to justify signing the West Ham United record but took a minute of brilliant quality to earn a 1-1 side draw for Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Christian Benteke had taken Palace ahead in the first half with a powerful header, and was sent off again, but Haller lit up the London derby with a sublime 55-minute bike kick.

Vladimir Coufal moved a cross into the area and Haller, with his back to goal, launched himself into the air before hitting a kick over acrobatic past Vicente Guaita.

“Finally. I was a little unlucky last week (against Leeds) so it’s good to get a goal for a goal like that. Special,” Haller said.

“This season I haven’t played as much but I’ve scored more goals. I’m just happy today.”

The draw left West Ham seventh in the table with Palace in 12th.

Pablo Fornals spent a good chance to advance West Ham but Palace looked dangerous with Benteke causing home defense problems with his air ability.

In the 34th minute a well-worked Palace move came down the right side with Joel Ward shaking in a cross and Benteke lost his mark before putting power on a header past Lukasz Fabianski.

Guaita saved well from Jarrod Bowen as West Ham responded but Benteke should have made it 2-0 from low side Andros Townsend into the area but his casual flick was saved by Fabianski.

Fifteen minutes after Haller’s stunning intervention, Benteke blotted out his copybook while challenging for a high ball and grabbed Tomas Soucek with his arm.

There was nothing malicious about him but referee David Coote decided he deserved a yellow card, Benteke ‘s second game. West Ham looked in favor to take all three points at that level but apart from one attempt by Declan Rice the guests were unable to count their numerical advantage.

Palace manager Roy Hodgson said he was pleased with his team ‘s display but is disappointed by Benteke’ s dismissal.

“Good result for us because we had to play 30 minutes with 10 men – I didn’t understand the put away,” he said.

“That kind of challenge always happens in football.”

Benteke will now miss the next game at Palace against his former club Liverpool.
